On January 16, our country honored the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by continuing his unfinished work to redeem the soul of America. Among other things, Dr. King called for greater equity in our health system, and High Impacto is providing free HIV prevention and care services for all, especially for the most vulnerable and marginalized communities. By providing free of charge services and improving access to HIV testing and treatment, we are adding great services and helping to make health care a right and not just a privilege.
For this commemoration, we are inviting everyone to honor those incredible and courageous people who together with Dr. King imagined a different future for America. We also invite everyone to pay tribute to Bayard Rustin, a close adviser to Dr. King and one of the most influential and effective organizers of the civil rights movement. While Rustin’s homosexuality and his former affiliation with the Communist Party led some to question Dr. King’s relationship with him, Dr. King recognized the importance of Rustin’s skills and dedication to the civil rights movement. In a 1960 letter, King told a colleague, “We are fully committed to the method of nonviolence in our struggle and are convinced that Bayard’s experience and commitment in this area will be invaluable.” High Impacto believes that our diverse and multi-ethnic community, comprised of different genders, cultures, gender identities, religions, sexual orientations, and many other differences is what makes our communities unique and stronger. The White House mentioned in its proclamation for this year that Dr. King envisioned a different future for America, an America he called the “Beloved Community.” We at High Impact also agree that building the Beloved Community requires a key shift in human understanding which is why we work for a happy and healthy Community. We also invite you to join us in seeking a better way to deal with our differences without hostility, in a way that recognizes the interconnectedness of all humanity and allows us to move forward together.

This month we are commemorating this day by inviting everyone to continue with the commemorative events and offer the best of our services and direct actions. Let us hold up a mirror to America and ask ourselves the question from the White House 2023 Proclamation:  What kind of country do we want to be?  Will we honor Dr. King’s legacy by rising together, backed by each other’s successes, enriched by each other’s differences, and completed by each other’s compassion? At High Impacto, we believe that we can.
